Beach Sitting & Para Volleyball: new possibilities on the sand

Beach Volley World has developed a project dedicated to testing, developing and promoting Beach Sitting Volleyball and Beach Para (Standing) Volleyball, two disciplines that can broaden opportunities to practice sports on the sand.

The project has been submitted to FIPAV and proposes a pathway that combines sporting activity, technical and regulatory experimentation, education, scientific research and the creation of new opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

TWO DISCIPLINES, ONE PROJECT

Making the sand accessible to new athletes

Beach Sitting Volleyball and Beach Para (Standing) Volleyball start from different needs and ways of playing, but share the same perspective: creating technical, organizational and educational conditions that allow an ever-growing number of people to practice sports on the sand.

The BVW project therefore goes beyond sporting practice: it includes on-court experimentation, rule development, research, coach education and the progressive creation of an organized movement.

BEACH SITTING VOLLEYBALL

A discipline to test and build.

BEACH PARA (STANDING) VOLLEYBALL

Standing beach volleyball, adapted to athletes' functional characteristics.

BEACH SITTING VOLLEYBALL

A new discipline to test on the sand

Taking Sitting Volleyball onto the sand means working with a surface, movement patterns and playing conditions that are profoundly different from those indoors.

The BVW project therefore includes a genuine on-court experimentation phase: testing court dimensions and organization, movement patterns, technical skills, match dynamics and possible rule adaptations, while collecting observations and data that can support the progressive development of the discipline.

The goal is to contribute to the development of a Beach Sitting Volleyball model that is practical, competitive, inclusive and technically coherent, through a process in which on-court experience and research advance together.

1

TEST

Bring hypotheses onto the court and test how they work in practice, including any critical issues.

2

MEASURE

Collect data and observations on movement, technique, performance and surface characteristics.

3

ADAPT

Identify technical and regulatory solutions suited to playing on sand.

4

VALIDATE

Progressively turn experimentation into a model that can be shared and replicated.

The rules are not the starting point. They are one of the outcomes of experimentation.

BEACH PARA · STANDING VOLLEYBALL

Standing beach volleyball, beyond barriers

Beach Para (Standing) Volleyball brings athletes with different physical disabilities onto the sand, preserving the dynamic and competitive nature of beach volleyball while adapting the sport to different functional characteristics.

The BVW project proposes a technical and methodological development pathway that includes functional classification of athletes, rule experimentation, study of movement on sand and evaluation of the most appropriate solutions, including for athletes who use prostheses or other assistive devices.

The goal is to help create conditions in which athletes with different characteristics can train and compete through clear, replicable sporting and technical criteria that can progressively be shared.

1

CLASSIFY

Understand athletes' functional characteristics in order to build appropriate conditions for sporting competition.

2

ADAPT

Test rules, spaces and playing methods in relation to the discipline's needs.

3

EXPERIMENT

Study movement, performance and the interaction between athlete, sand and any assistive devices in real on-court conditions.

4

COMPETE

Build a discipline in which inclusion is the starting point, while authentic sport and competition drive its development.

RESEARCH & EXPERIMENTATION

Measure first. Then understand. Finally, build.

When a discipline is still developing, on-court experience is essential, but it is not enough on its own. The project proposes combining sporting experimentation with observation, data collection and scientific research, involving university and professional expertise.

Biomechanics of movement on sand, motor adaptation, performance, interaction with prostheses and assistive devices, functional classification and training methods are some of the areas that can be studied to turn practical experience into usable knowledge.

The goal is not simply to understand whether a solution works, but how and why it works, so that it can be improved, documented and replicated.

1

BIOMECHANICS

Movement, footwork and technical skills on the sand.

2

MOTOR ADAPTATION

Athletes' responses to the specific characteristics of the two disciplines.

3

PROSTHESES & ASSISTIVE DEVICES

Interaction between athlete, devices and playing surface.

4

METHODOLOGY

Turn data and experience into training protocols and technical guidelines.

From experimentation to knowledge. From knowledge to a stronger discipline.

EDUCATION

A discipline grows when the people who teach it grow

Experimenting with new ways of playing also means developing new skills and knowledge. Coaches, strength and conditioning professionals and officials need to understand the specific characteristics of the athletes, the surface and the rules as they are progressively defined.

For this reason, the project includes a pathway of specialist education and continuing development, capable of transferring what emerges from experimentation and research into everyday on-court practice.

Workshops, technical discussion sessions and collaborations with experts from national and international backgrounds can contribute to building a shared body of methodological knowledge.

COACHES

Training methods, exercise adaptation and management of different functional characteristics.

OFFICIALS

Knowledge of experimental rules and progressive consolidation of officiating criteria.

EXCHANGE

Bring together experience, research and different areas of expertise to accelerate the development of the disciplines.

Experimenting means learning. Educating means turning what we have learned into knowledge others can use.

FROM PROJECT TO MOVEMENT

A discipline grows when more and more people can practice it

Developing Beach Sitting and Para Volleyball means going beyond testing rules and methods: it requires real opportunities to discover the disciplines, try them, train and compete.

The project therefore proposes a progressive pathway that starts with athlete involvement and demonstration events, moves through education and the development of local expertise, and can lead to a network capable of supporting activities and competitions across different areas of the country.

The ambition is to turn experiences initially concentrated in a few locations into an organized, accessible and progressively widespread sports movement.

1

ENGAGE

Introduce the disciplines and create real opportunities to try them.

2

BUILD EXPERTISE

Train coaches, officials and other professionals who can develop activities in other areas as well.

3

BUILD A NETWORK

Progressively connect centers, clubs, institutions and experts interested in developing the disciplines.

4

COMPETE

Over time, build opportunities for sporting competition, circuits and competitive formats suited to the growth of the movement.

The perspective proposed to FIPAV

Among the possible developments, the project identifies the creation of a national network, dedicated events and circuits and, as the movement matures, increasingly structured forms of national competition.

A PLACE TO EXPERIMENT

From Pala BVW, a project with a national perspective

Developing disciplines that are still not widespread requires continuity, suitable spaces and a place where athletes, coaches, research and experimentation can come together.

The project identifies Pala BVW as a possible operational hub for the first activities: on-court testing, data collection, education, training camps, technical discussion and events dedicated to Beach Sitting and Para Volleyball.

As part of the proposal submitted to FIPAV, Beach Volley World has also proposed that Pala BVW be recognized as a National Federal Center of reference for the development of these disciplines.

THE PROPOSAL

A center conceived not simply as a place to train, but as a meeting point for sport, experimentation, research, education and movement development, capable of producing experience and expertise that can progressively be transferred to other areas as well.

The project and the proposal for recognition are currently under FIPAV evaluation. Any recognition and institutional development will be communicated only following the relevant federal decisions.

BUILDING TOGETHER

A project open to expertise, experience and people

The development of Beach Sitting and Para Volleyball cannot be the work of a single organization. It requires athletes willing to experiment, coaches ready to challenge methods and solutions, scientific expertise, associations, institutions and people interested in contributing to the growth of the disciplines.

Beach Volley World wants to create a space where these experiences can meet, be compared and progressively turn into knowledge, sporting practice and new opportunities.

1

ATHLETES

To try, train and contribute directly to on-court experimentation.

2

COACHES & PROFESSIONALS

To share sporting, medical, biomechanical and methodological expertise.

3

UNIVERSITIES & RESEARCH

To build study programs, data-collection projects, internships and scientific collaborations.

4

ASSOCIATIONS & INSTITUTIONS

To broaden the network, reach new athletes and contribute to local and national development.
